Hunger Games Movie Review

Assalamualaikum and welcome to our blog,πŸ˜πŸ˜€

For movie review, we have decided to choose The Hunger Games (2012), American dystopia science fiction adventure film directed by Gary Ross and was based on novel by Suzzane Collins. According to Collin (2014), a film critic, The Hunger Games is adaptations of the first in a set of three fantasy books aimed at younger readers by Suzanne Collins where the teenagers from 12 districts of a post-Apocalyptic nation called Panem are go against each other in an annual, state-sponsored fight to the death.

After watching this film, we find it very interesting and somehow portrayed the situation of the past and not impossible may be repeated in the future.

It also reminds us to one of the saying by the founder of Marxism, the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles (Karl Marx). It means, class struggles naturally become part of the society and is a common no matter how develop the society is.

Therefore, we want to review and relate it with literary criticism elements which are Feminism, Marxism and social stratification. The first one is the most obvious spectacular is the employment of social stratification between working class people, where they were divided to 12 District. Each district was given different tasks and has to provide and offer something to capital which is Capitol. Here we can see working class people have to struggle and be responsible in producing things as dictated by the Capitol. For example, in District 1, they will provide with luxury good and District 4 act as peacemaker. For this movie, they focus more on District 12, the least taken care district by the Capitol. We can see how Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mallark and Gale Hawthorne struggle every single day just to keep living.

Basically the idea is like this, the closer the district to the Capitol, the more care given by them. Amusingly, the name of the state itself, Capitol, is very interesting coincidence which reminds us to Capitalism.  Well, maybe the writer wants to show is the society rule by Capitalism and the corruption in the state.

The author wants to highlight the power of women and also shows the equality between man and women in that society where anyone can join the battle no matter what ages or gender. As the last winner is Katniss and Peeta from District 12, Katniss character appear unusually brighter compared to Peeta. Therefore, we think, the author wants to insert element of feminism where women can become like a man and maybe much stronger than them. Like for example, Katniss never missed her shot and that is her speciality.

As define by Merriam-Webster dictionary, Marxism is the political, economic, and social principles and policies advocated by Marx especially a theory and practice of socialism including the labor theory of valued, dialectal materialism, the class struggle, and dictatorship of the proletariat until the establishment of a classless society.

As we know, the present of class struggle typically associated by dictatorship kind of ruling. So, it is obvious in this film that all the elements are fits together. We can see, how the capital treat working class people and treat their life as games, Thus, people should unite and be together in order stand out and fight corrupt society.

In conclusion, this film is actually contain a lot of message and symbol indirectly insert by the author. Even though it is just a fiction, but it is something worth to be ponder about on how our future might be. As a citizen, we should learn from this film that a fate of a state and society is depends on its ruler. So, our responsibility is to choose a good leader.
